The Fly-Tipping Intervention Grant Scheme
The aim of the scheme is to provide funding to local authorities in England for projects at known fly-tipping hot-spots that show the potential for improving infrastructure, raising awareness, and supporting enforcement activity. The grant scheme aims to support projects that influence long term behaviour change, reduce fly-tipping incidence and that can be easily replicated or scaled up. Key learnings from these projects are then shared with the wider sector to enable others to learn from the interventions trialled.
Round one of the Fly-Tipping grant scheme awarded £450,000 to 11 local authorities in grants between £25,000 - £50,000, and ran between March-September 2022. A significant proportion of the projects funded in round one were centred on the use of CCTV and overall projects were successful, for example Durham saw a 60% reduction in Fly-Tipping where CCTV was installed.
Round two of the Fly-Tipping grant scheme awarded £780,000 to 21 local authorities in England in grants between £25,000-£50,000, and started in March 2023. Round two saw a mixture of interventions trialled such as CCTV, waste amnesty events, target hardneing and beautification methods. Overall projects were successful, for example Pendle saw a 43% reduction in Fly-Tipping where waste amnesty events were held.
Round three of the Fly-Tipping grant scheme is currently in progress and Defra will be awarding nearly £1 million to more local authorities in England in 2024. In addition to supporting more infrastructure, the next round of projects will help raise awareness of the household waste duty of care and are expected to be delivered by October 2024.
