Join us, and help us make every school an Eco-School

This autumn, world leaders will come together in Glasgow for COP26 with a single purpose – to limit global warming and to pull the planet back from the brink of disaster.

The hope is that COP26 will kickstart immediate and dramatic change, and one thing is certain, everyone will have a role to play as the world tries to limit global warming.

Despite the urgency of the problem and the need for action now, climate change is not embedded across the National Curriculum and only appears in science and geography, meaning that some young people will never have the chance to learn the things that everyone needs to know.

There are currently 8.9 million pupils attending 24,400 schools in England. Imagine the scale of the change this number of young people could make, if they had the right knowledge, skills and opportunities to do so?

That is our vision, and that collective change is within our grasp.

That’s why this autumn, Keep Britain Tidy and Eco-Schools England are asking MPs and the Secretary of State for Education to support us to make every school an Eco-School.

About Eco-Schools

Eco-Schools is a student-led programme based around ten environmental topics, all of which are intrinsic to carbon reduction and tackling climate change. It empowers young people to make real-world carbon reductions – both within their own schools and more broadly –helping them to become the environmental leaders of tomorrow.

In Scotland and Wales the Eco-Schools programme is supported and partially funded by the devolved governments, meaning English pupils are – and will grow up to be – environmentally disadvantaged, compared with their peers in the nations.

ATTEND our APPG MEETING

MPs and peers are invited to join the next meeting of the Tidy Britain All-Party Parliamentary Group on Wednesday 24 November 2021 at 10am-11am (virtually), to hear why making every school an Eco-School can deliver significant carbon reductions and empower young people to lead environmental change.

The Tidy Britain APPG, for which Keep Britain Tidy provides the Secretariat, is chaired by Kevin Hollinrake MP and brings together parliamentarians, experts and stakeholders to discuss solutions to resource and waste issues. At the event, you will hear from:

  • Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, CEO of Keep Britain Tidy
  • Peter Kyle MP, Shadow Minister (Education) (Schools)
  • Lesley Jones, President of the Foundation for Environmental Education and CEO of Keep Wales Tidy
  • Graham Frost, representing the National Association of Head Teachers, and Head Teacher at Robert Ferguson Primary School
  • Minister from the Department of Education (to be confirmed).
