Leading change
We know that many of our local authority partners have targets around carbon reduction, and the most robust strategies seek to make changes – and see results – at scale.
With just under 25,000 schools in England, it’s clear that schools can play a pivotal role in carbon reduction. Estimates suggest that schools collectively could prevent more than 600,000 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere – the same carbon reduction as taking more than 130,000 cars off the road each year.
That’s where our Eco-Schools programme can help you to achieve your net zero carbon targets. Our long-standing, tried-and-tested international environmental education programme can help you reduce your carbon emissions at scale, providing a blueprint for engaging schools en masse, with the educational benefits that come from a programme that is led in schools by students.

The Eco-Schools programme can help to meet carbon reduction targets across your borough. Get in touch with eco-schools@keepbritaintidy.org to discuss getting schools in your local authority Eco-Schools Accredited.
We recently invited local authorities to join us for our Every School an Eco-School webinar. At the session, experts explained how – and why – the Eco-Schools programme can help boroughs to reduce carbon emissions at scale.
We heard from Graham Frost, a headteacher representing the National Association of Head Teachers, about how long-term thinking and investment supports schools. Paul Atkin, chair of the National Education Union's Climate Change Network, spoke about how the Eco-Schools Programme helps schools to positively address the anxiety young people feel about the climate emergency.
We looked at the targeted action in Leicester, and heard from Lee Jowett, Sustainable Schools Coordinator, and Councillor Adam Clarke about their dedicated team, and how they measure the carbon impact of schools across departments within the local authority.
We have put together a short reel of highlights from the session:
