inspiring environmental leaders
As Greta Thunberg famously said, ‘our house is on fire’ but, despite this, environmental education is limited and only briefly referenced in a few subject areas - this must change. At Eco-Schools England we have always stated that the current national curriculum needs to be greener to ensure widespread awareness of sustainability across the entire education system. Environmental matters should not be confined to geography and science lessons, they must also be integrated into maths, modern foreign languages, history, performing arts, creative media and engineering. In fact, every subject area, both academic and vocational, should have the environment woven into its fabric.
“Caring for our planet should be a must for all schools, we have a duty to enable children to become passionate about our present and their future.” Francesca McLoughlin, Headteacher, Sparkwell All Saints Primary School
About Eco-Schools
Eco-Schools is a student-led programme that allows young people to lead and affect change. It will help you build an army of expert environmentalists ready to tackle challenges such as reducing waste in the school, saving energy, reducing carbon emissions, or even re-wilding the playground!
As well as building confidence and leadership skills, the Eco-Schools framework links to Ofsted’s student personal development, behaviour & welfare common inspection framework. You can learn more about how, here.

Register your school
Register your school, nursery or college to become an Eco-School today and access nearly 100 resources to help young people drive environmental change in school and across their local community.
Alongside asking for every school to become Eco-Schools, Keep Britain Tidy and Eco-Schools England are asking that Eco-Coordinators are offered remission (time or wage) in recognition of the additional work they are taking. This will ensure that young people in their school have the opportunity to access environmental education and action through the Eco-Schools programme.
