A Keep Britain Tidy project, in partnership with Newham Council, which saw fly-tipping cut by up to 73% in pilot areas, has been shortlisted for two prestigious national awards.

The Better Streets Programme is in the running for the Local Government Chronicle’s Environmental Services Award and APSE’s Best Community and Neighbourhood Initiative Award.

To learn more about the Better Streets Programme, take a look at our case study.

The programme, which tested a variety of different approaches, was developed by the charity’s Centre for Social Innovation on the back of extensive research with fly-tippers to gain a deep understanding of the different behaviours contributing to the issue.

Five interventions were included, among them the use of crime scene tape and social impact stencils at the scene of fly-tips, along with the introduction of a No Waste on Streets policy with the provision of bespoke storage facilities.

In addition, a series of workshops were held in schools and a number of ‘pop-up’ community events took place, all with the aim of engaging and educating residents about the problem of fly-tipping and what to do with their bulky waste.

Even after the trials were completed, the amount of fly-tipping in pilot areas was still more than 50% lower on average than pre-intervention levels.

Commenting on the success of the initiative, Cllr James Asser from Newham said: “Newham is faced with significant instances of fly-tipping that cost the council and taxpayers million to clear each year. We know the cleanliness of the borough is a top priority for residents.

“This work with partners and residents shows real change can be made to improve the borough by working together.”

Keep Britain Tidy can provide bespoke support to local authorities and housing providers to efficiently implement these interventions for the best results. Join us for a free webinar at 12.30pm on the 10th November 2021 to find out more or get in touch with us via enquiries@keepbritaintidy.org
