Keep Britain Tidy joins the Big Help Out

Keep Britain Tidy is joining communities across the country as part of the Big Help Out initiative

From Monday 8th May litter-picking volunteers across the country are being asked to carry out their own Coronation Clean Ups to spruce up the country during the first official week of the King’s reign.

The environmental charity is one of thousands of organisations across the country that are getting together for the Big Help Out – a volunteering initiative inspiring people to help out in our own local communities to mark His Majesty The King’s Coronation.

The more people who organise an event, the more impactive the Big Help Out will be.

Keep Britain Tidy is calling on its army of #LitterHeroes to grab their litter-pickers and help tackle the scourge of discarded food packaging, plastic bottles, and cigarette butts affecting our wildlife, streets, countryside and our sense of pride.

The time given by volunteer litter-pickers is crucial in fighting back against the menace as more than two million pieces of litter are dropped on the streets of the UK every day, with a cost to the public purse of almost £1 billion every year to clean up just a fraction of it.

The call to action comes as the charity's newest #LitterHeroes Ambassador has been announced as one of the Royal Voluntary Service's 500 Coronation Champions.

Annette Lloyd, from South Staffordshire has been recognised by Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort as part of the official Coronation celebrations in conjunction with Royal Voluntary Service.

Annette volunteered with Keep Britain Tidy's WatersideCare programme until it concluded in April and then became one of the charity's #LitterHeroes Ambassadors so she could continue her work to protect the local environment.

She was crowned a Coronation Champion following a call out to the nation to nominate their volunteer heroes. Almost 5,000 entries were received, with nominations made for individuals aged 14 to 103.

Annette and her husband Keri, who help their community care for their local waterway, Moat Brook in Bilbrook, have been invited to attend the Windsor Castle Coronation Concert.

Another volunteer, Annemarie Kerr, who works with the Clean Your Patch CIC in Plymouth, has also been crowned a Coronation Champion.

Congratulations to both of them!
