A Rubbish Reality: Our litter problem and why it matters

Over the past decade, Keep Britain Tidy has assessed the litter on our streets: where it is, what it is, how much of it there is. Our new report A Rubbish Reality: Our litter problem and why it matters brings this data together with a recent survey of the public on how they feel about litter and what they think should be done about it.

The report uncovers new insight into the scale and nature of our litter problem and where we need to focus attention to make the biggest difference.

It reveals the reality that it is almost impossible to find anywhere that isn’t impacted by litter, and the detrimental effect this is having on people and places. Crucially, the report highlights how it is the most deprived communities that are most impacted by litter.

While the upcoming introduction of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) is fantastic progress, urgent action is needed to tackle other forms of litter that blight the places we live, visit and those in between. We call on the government both locally and nationally, on industry and, indeed, on anyone who has an interest in improving the environment on people’s doorsteps to acknowledge our country’s litter problem and work with us to create litter-free places for all.
