Roadside litter interventions

Roadside littering is a costly problem for organisations responsible for maintaining our transport networks, including local authorities, highway agencies, and private land managers. The issue results in spoilt landscapes, compromised safety and millions spent on clean-up—money that should be used for critical infrastructure.

Don't be a tosser

Keep Britain Tidy offers two high-impact, evidence-based campaigns specifically designed to target the high-risk behaviour of throwing rubbish from vehicles: Don’t be a Tosser and Death Trap. While these proven roadside litter interventions are available for all organisations, Network members receive an exclusive discount.

Our vehicle littering interventions

Don’t be a Tosser

This hard-hitting national campaign sends a clear, zero-tolerance message to drivers and their passengers: our roads are not one giant litter bin.

  • The problem: Littering from vehicles is a significant issue. For example, Highways England collects approximately 200,000 sacks of litter (about 7,500 tonnes) from the strategic road network every year.
  • The message: We directly address the individuals responsible, reminding them to keep their rubbish in their car or van and dispose of it responsibly (or recycle it).
  • The power: The campaign reinforces the critical point that the vehicle owner can be fined up to £500 if rubbish is seen being thrown out of a car window, encouraging local authorities to use their new enforcement powers effectively.

Death Trap: Bin it, Don't Kill it

This intervention targets littering from vehicles by connecting the behaviour directly with its devastating impact on wildlife, particularly small mammals.

  • The insight: Research shows that roadside litter is killing millions of our smallest mammals—a vital part of our food chain. People who mindlessly toss their rubbish often fail to realise the lethal consequence of their waste.
  • The Intervention: We use large, reflective, and brightly coloured signs with hard-hitting, emotive messaging. These signs are strategically placed at roadside locations where littering is an issue and traffic is slow-moving, such as laybys, roundabout approaches, and slip roads.
  • The goal: By appealing to drivers' and passengers' empathy, this campaign aims to change behaviour in the moment they are most likely to engage in the littering act.
