Fly-tipping Interventions

Fly-tipping is a crime that diminishes communities, endangers public health, and imposes a heavy financial burden on local authorities and land managers. Simply clearing the waste is not enough; you need high-impact, behaviourally-informed strategies that deter offenders and restore public confidence.

Our fly-tipping interventions

These interventions are low-cost, high-impact tools that dramatically alter the environment at fly-tipping hotspots, leveraging behavioural science to challenge the offender's anonymity and social acceptance.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) tape

This visually striking intervention treats fly-tipped waste as evidence at a crime scene.

  • The Impact: By cordoning off the waste with official-looking tape, you immediately change the perception of the area, signalling to potential offenders that the crime is noticed, taken seriously, and under investigation.
  • The Outcome: The CSI Tape intervention is highly effective, proven to slash fly-tipping in hotspots by up to 73% in trials.

Social Impact Stencils

These stencils use bold, visible messaging to hold offenders accountable while reminding the community of the financial consequences of their actions.

  • The Message: Stencils applied to pavements or walls near fly-tipping sites reinforce that the area is being watched and highlight the 'cost to the community'—emphasising that fly-tipping wastes taxpayer money that could be spent on vital local services.
  • The Benefit: Both this and the CSI Tape intervention are proven to create positive perceptions among residents that the council is actively working to tackle fly-tipping.

Case study: Better Streets with Newham Borough Council

Our success in tackling one of the UK’s most severe fly-tipping challenges proves the efficacy of this approach. We partnered with Newham Borough Council on their 'Better Streets' project, using these interventions strategically alongside tailored support. This data-led approach delivered significant results, demonstrating that combining strong visual deterrence with targeted community messaging is key to sustainable reduction.

Cost to the Community

The Cost to the Community intervention effectively reframes fly-tipping as a direct local loss. By posting highly visible signs at hotspot sites that calculate clean-up costs in terms of lost community services (like playground repairs), the campaign makes the financial burden personal. Up to 95% of residents felt that the campaign shows their council is working to tackle dumped waste in their area.
