Keep Britain Tidy is an independent environmental charity, registered with the Charity Commission for England & Wales. Our Charity Number is 1071737. We were 'born' in 1954 when the National Federation of Women's Institutes passed a resolution to 'keep Britain tidy' and became a charity in 1960.

Keep Britain Tidy was established as a charity with three purposes:

  • To educate the public concerning the preservation, protection and enhancement of the environment, the use of sustainable waste management practices and the impact of the individuals' own actions on the environment
  • To protect, preserve and enhance the environments of town and country for the general benefit of the national at large
  • To preserve and protect the physical and natural environment for the public benefit through the promotion of waste reduction, re-use. reclamation and recycling of waste materials and the benefits of sustainable consumption and production.

These charitable purposes remain at the heart of our work today.

Our Trustees

Keep Britain Tidy has a board of trustees who are responsible for the general control and management of the administration of the charity.

Suzy Brain England OBE

Suzy Brain England OBE was appointed as Chair of Keep Britain Tidy in September 2016.

She is currently the Chartered Director Lead Examiner for the Institute of Directors, a trustee of NHS Retirement Fellowship and a Co-opted Director of Doncaster Chamber of Commerce. She is also the Chair of the Board at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust. 

Suzy has a track record as the Chair of organisations in many sectors and was formerly Chair at Derwent Living Housing Association, Berneslai Homes, Connexions West Yorkshire, Ofcom’s Advisory Committee for England, Kirklees Community Healthcare Services and the Decision-making Standards Committee for the Department for Work and Pensions. She is a former non-executive director with Barnsley Foundation Trust Hospital, Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals, NHS Providers, and the Melton Mowbray Building Society following a fulfilling executive career.

She began her career as a journalist and broadcaster and has been a director of the Talent Foundation, Focus Central London Training and Enterprise Council, Library Services UK and Morley Books.

It was as CEO of the Earth Centre in South Yorkshire that Suzy developed an understanding of sustainable development, a core value for Keep Britain Tidy.

She was awarded an OBE for Public Service by the late Queen.

 

Philippa Anderson

Philippa Anderson is a communications consultant and business writer who began her career in marketing, after completing a business degree. She has worked with corporate clients such as 3M, Barclays, Coca-Cola, Marks & Spencer, and Tesco on corporate responsibility initiatives and change management programmes. She has written and contributed to business books, including Dorling Kindersley's The Business Book and Management in Minutes, published by Quercus. She is a member of the Society of Authors.

She is a Governor of Manchester Metropolitan University, rated the UK’s No. 1 most sustainable university, and has held several voluntary roles - including as trustee for SeeAbility, working with Save the Children and as a volunteer teacher in refugee camps in South-East Asia for the United Nations' High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Philippa is passionate about sustainability and the environment.

Kresse Wesling

Kresse Wesling CBE is a multi-award winning environmental entrepreneur. After first meeting the London Fire Brigade in 2005, Kresse launched Elvis & Kresse, which rescues and transforms decommissioned fire hose into innovative lifestyle products and returns 50% of profits to the Fire Fighters Charity. 

The company now collects 12 different waste streams and has several charitable partnerships and collaborations across industries. 

In 2021 Elvis & Kresse also took on a farm in order to establish a regenerative agriculture project, generate their own renewables and implement a host of environmental initiatives.

Vincent Neate

Vincent Neate is a Chartered Accountant, Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, Fellow of the RSA, Master Practitioner of NLP and Certified Mediator.  His commercial career spans twenty-five years including twenty at KPMG where he was a Partner providing services in the Private Equity sector before being appointed to head KPMG’s Sustainability Consulting practice.

Since retiring from KPMG, Vincent has retrained as a maths teacher, getting his qualified teacher status and PGCE from Goldsmiths University.

As well as Chairing the Audit and Finance Committee at Keep Britain Tidy, Vincent is on the governing bodies at Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge College Group (HRUC) and the Fortune Centre for Riding Therapy, and is a director of The Angel CoFund.

Lydia Burns

Lydia Burns is the Associate Director for Trusts & Foundations at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where she builds relationships with philanthropic institutions to deliver impactful conservation and research projects. Prior to her role at Kew, she was Grants Manager at The Mental Health Foundation where she raised and managed restricted funding for England and Wales.

Lydia has a BA in Accounting and Finance from the University of Exeter and before moving to the not-for profit sector she was Financial Controller of a Research and Development Engineering company.

Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) with more than 15 years' experience in leading on developing sustainability strategies and delivering environmental improvement programmes across various large public and private sector organisations. 

In his former role, Muhammad served as a local authority councillor and a cabinet member (2018-2022) responsible for transport, climate change, parks and waste and recycling. He brings a wealth of strategic awareness and knowledge of how local authorities are keeping streets clean, parks open and tackling climate change while responding to financial challenges and political priorities.

Muhammad currently works as a Programme Director for a large central government department and leads the department’s climate change and sustainability unit. 

He has an MSc in Environmental Management from the University of Nottingham, is a Chartered Environmentalist and full member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

Ray Mills

Ray Mills recently retired from PwC where he was a partner in Corporate Finance where he led the Infrastructure and Government team. In a varied career with the firm he specialised in advising public and private sector clients on regeneration and infrastructure and real estate finance. He also set up and led the Social Investment and Enterprise advisory team providing support to governments, agencies, social enterprises and corporates seeking to increase their social and economic impact through investment in socially responsible ventures.

Ray is currently a non-executive director and investor in a number of start-up businesses covering the media and real estate sectors as well as a trustee of both the Newbridge Project which provides studio space for artists and also the Newcastle Theatre Royal Trust.

Vanessa Maselino

First published at the age of 11 and speaking on Jack Petchey platforms by 14, Vanessa Maselino has since gone on to become the Founder and active Chief Executive for youth-led environmental & lifestyle magazine BASEMNT LTD. As a freelance writer and speaker, Vanessa frequently consults on the topics of sustainable living, conscious entrepreneurialism and consumer mindsets.

With an academic background in the creative industries, and subsequent qualifications in marketing and events management, Vanessa’s most recent ventures include the launch of sponsored plastic and waste-free community events in partnership with responsible brands and known sustainability advocates.

Forging a creative network with international reach, Vanessa’s ultimate passion is to use these resources to contribute to positive changes within UK consumer consumption and raise visibility for marginalised groups within the eco-movements.

Our CEO - Allison Ogden Newton OBE

Allison joined Keep Britain Tidy as Chief Executive in 2015.

She appears regularly in national and local media, on TV and radio and at conferences and events, to discuss a breadth of issues, from fly-tipping to green spaces.

In September 2025, Allison was appointed a Non-Executive Director at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

She is an experienced charity professional and social entrepreneur, having worked as Chief Executive at World Child Cancer and Social Enterprise London. She was founder of breakthrough social value think-tank The Transition Institute.

Allison has a master’s degree from Warwick Business School and is a graduate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. She has acted as an equal value advisor to the Equal Opportunities Commission and served as a member of the Department of Innovation and Skills' Women’s Enterprise Taskforce.

She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a visiting fellow of Northampton University, a board member of the British Cleaning Council and Wildlife and Countryside Link and chair of the Plastics Action Steering Group, led by Thames21.

Allison was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours 2019/20 for her services to the environment and social enterprise.

Allison Ogden-Newton OBE
