Volunteering
Keep Britain Tidy's vision is a clean and healthy environment, rich in wildlife, and valued by people who 'love where they live'. We believe that passionate volunteers are essential to achieving this goal.
By joining our movement, you become a changemaker, creating measurable change in your community and for the planet. Your local environment—be it a park, river, or beach—contributes directly to your wellbeing. Every minute of volunteer action is one small step in tackling the global problems of litter, pollution, and climate change, starting right where you live.
We offer flexible and impactful ways to get involved in local environmental action:
Join the UK’s largest network of litter-pickers! As a Litter Hero, you have the flexibility to tackle litter whenever and wherever you choose—on your street, in your park or as part of a local group event.
Becoming a Litter Hero is easy! Simply log a pick or find a local event on our Litter Heroes page.
These established, committed groups focus on the critical task of removing litter and pollution from our coasts, beaches and riverbanks. Volunteers in South West and East of England work closely with us to protect these fragile aquatic ecosystems.
These projects offer volunteers opportunities for deeper involvement, skills training and team engagement. If you're interested be sure to check out our RiverCare & BeachCare page for more information.
Volunteering has a demonstrable positive impact on your health and wellbeing by contributing to the '5 ways to wellbeing':
Connect: Meet new people and create meaningful connections (82% of one group reported developing new relationships!).
Be active: Getting outside and being physically active promotes better sleep, reduces stress and improves your mood.
Take notice: Taking action for a cause you care about helps reduce eco-anxiety and builds a sense of personal achievement.
Give and learn: Gain new skills and boost your self-worth by giving back to your community and the environment.
Your action helps build safer, more cohesive, and healthier neighbourhoods:
Deter littering: Your visible action models positive behaviour that helps to deter future littering.
Promote safety: Cleaner spaces encourage people to feel safer using public parks for exercise and social interaction.
Community cohesion: Volunteering creates community spirit (86.5% of volunteers report feeling more part of their local community).
Every piece of litter you collect is one less piece of pollution in our global environment, helping to fight pollution and climate change:
Tackling pollution: You directly reduce plastic pollution that harms wildlife and ecosystems (from street to sea).
Gateway to action: Volunteering makes people want to do more for the environment. By using litter-picking as a tangible gateway, we encourage a snowball effect of pro-environmental behaviours, including habitat recovery and sustainable living.
You are key to achieving our mission:
Achieve goals: Volunteers enable the charity to meet its ambitious goals of reducing litter, waste, and resource use.
Driving change: The data you provide when you log your picks helps us accurately report on community action, which we use to campaign for positive environmental change at local and national levels, like campaigning for the introduction of a deposit return scheme.
Win, EssexVolunteering with Southend BeachCare has connected me with wonderful people who share a passion for clean beaches. The greatest satisfaction is gathering our bags at the end and knowing we left the beach as nature intended.
