RiverCare & BeachCare

For over 20 years, Keep Britain Tidy's RiverCare & BeachCare programme, in partnership with Anglian Water, has empowered thousands of volunteers across the East of England to actively protect their local watercourses and coastlines.

Our Scope and Impact

Stretching from the Humber Estuary to the Essex coast, we protect and enhance diverse environments across the East of England.

We support communities caring for a wide variety of vital 'blue spaces,' including:

  • Open beaches and coastlines (e.g., Lincolnshire)
  • Precious chalk streams (e.g., Cambridgeshire)
  • Rivers and waterways in market towns (e.g., Suffolk, Northamptonshire)
  • Urban waterways in city centres (e.g., Peterborough, Lincoln)

Our impact in numbers: We support 50 Care Groups and empower over 1,000 dedicated volunteers across the region.

More than litter picking: Protect, improve, understand

Rivers and beaches are vital habitats for wildlife and inspiring places for communities to enjoy. Our groups are supported to carry out essential activities that enhance their local blue spaces:

  • Litter removal: Keeping waterways and coastlines free from damaging waste.
  • Habitat improvement: Carrying out work to create safer, healthier homes for local wildlife.
  • Water quality monitoring: Collecting data to help understand and improve the health of our rivers.
  • Local wildlife surveys: Documenting biodiversity to protect and enhance the environment.

A proud partnership: Endorsed by Anglian Water

"Anglian Water has long recognised the responsibility the water industry has towards safeguarding the environment. In everything we do, and in every choice we make we must ensure we continue to protect the environment and support the communities we serve.

The RiverCare & BeachCare programme is a fantastic way in which we can support our communities while delivering great outcomes for the environment, whether through tackling litter, invasive species removal or river restoration activities.

Our long-term partnership with Keep Britain Tidy since 2001 is testament to the on-going successes of the programme.”

Partner with us: Collaborate on initiatives

Many of our groups get involved with local environment improvement initiatives supported by wildlife trusts, paddle clubs, angling societies, local councils or other environmental organisations.

For example, Grantham RiverCare collaborated with partners, including the East Mercia Rivers Trust, for the Upper Witham Restoration Project.

Note: Collaborative involvement is at the discretion and capacity of our volunteer groups.
