Dog fouling interventions

Dog fouling is consistently cited as a major public concern, damaging the reputation of public spaces, posing health risks, and frustrating residents. For local authorities and land management organisations, tackling this issue requires more than just clean-up—it requires behaviour change.

Our dog fouling interventions

We provide evidence-based solutions that target different motivations for fouling and abandonment:

We're Watching You

We know that dog fouling increases as the nights draw in, and people are less likely to pick up when they feel they aren’t being observed. This award-winning campaign tackles this directly.

  • The power of visibility: We created innovative, eye-catching, glow-in-the-dark signs to remind thoughtless dog owners that “we’re watching you.”
  • The result: This campaign is highly effective, having successfully reduced dog fouling by up to 46% in trial areas.
  • Access: Standard packages include 40 x Glow in the Dark signs (A3 corex or Dibond) and digital assets. Network members have the option to add their local authority logo to the signs for maximum local impact.

There's No Such Thing as a Dog Poo Fairy

Increasingly, dog owners bag their pet's mess but then fail to dispose of the bag—a problem reported by 70% of local authorities. This light-hearted campaign directly addresses this behaviour.

  • The message: The campaign features an eye-catching creative of a "dog poo fairy" alongside the crucial message: ‘There's no such thing as the dog poo fairy.’
  • The solution: It encourages dog owners to bag that poop and reminds them that ‘any rubbish bin will do.’
  • The goal: By using humour, the campaign successfully puts an end to this offensive and harmful form of litter, promoting full compliance with responsible disposal.

Do it for Your Dog

This unique social media-focused campaign (free with Exemplar membership) shifts the messenger, leveraging the emotional bond between owners and their pets to drive compliance.

  • The messenger: The campaign features pet dogs, like Ben and Sarah, who remind owners of the need to pick up their poop, leveraging the levers of pride and shame.
  • The focus: The digital package includes videos and web banners designed to appeal to dog lovers who ponder what their pet would say if they could talk.
  • The options: You can choose a standard digital package or an enhanced package including physical signs. For maximum local impact, we can provide bespoke services such as targeted social media ad campaigns or recreating the videos with a local voiceover artist.
