Smoking related litter
Despite only 12% of the population being regular smokers we know that cigarette butts are in fact the country's most littered item.
That is why, over the last few years we have been working hard to tackle the blight of cigarette litter through our national behaviour change campaign, interventions, and partnerships.
Between 2022 and 2024, we reduced cigarette litter across the country by 17%.
Our Centre for Social Innovation are experts in helping you better understand the problems you are facing. We can deliver bespoke research to help you get a true picture of what helps or stops people from doing the ‘right’ thing in your area.
We estimate that through reach and targeting our behaviour change campaign has been seen by over 97% of smokers in England.
There are often gaps in evidence about exactly why people behave in a particular way. Working with us can help to fill these gaps and gather reliable insights to enable you to develop effective behaviour change strategies and interventions.
We use a mixed-methods approach and have over 20 years of experience of delivering the highest quality research. We are members of the Market Research Society and the Social Research Association.
In a bid to modify smokers’ behaviour without alienating them, our light-hearted creative revolves around a judgemental duck - Drake - condemning littering smokers, without shaming the individual.
Up to 5,000 cigarette butts are dropped down a single drain every year in Britain, according to our latest research. With more than 1,000,000 drains nationwide, this means that many millions of butts are ending up in UK waterways and ultimately, the sea.
As part of a research trial to help reduce cigarette butt litter across the country, Keep Britain Tidy is distributing Butt Boxes - smell-proof, portable containers in which you can stub and leave your cigarette butts.
The scheme is backed by actor and comedian Johnny Vegas, who was once fined for dropping a cigarette down a drain.
