Inspiring others, Litter Hero Emdad Rahman

All of our Litter Heroes go above and beyond to make a difference where they live. This is the story of Litter Heroes Ambassador Emdad Rahman, who lives in London. Our Litter Heroes Ambassador programme is made possible thanks to funds raised by People's Postcode Lottery.

Emdad developed the Little Litter League, a grassroots community initiative inspired by his desire to take action. He says his litter-picking journey started with a simple walk in his local park where he noticed just how much rubbish was being left behind.

He recalls: “I watched volunteers take out small mountains of waste from my neighbourhood lake. What began as frustration turned into action and I was gifted a litter pick, grabbed a bag, picked up what I could, and didn’t stop.

“From that moment, I realised that small, consistent actions could inspire big change in a community.”

What began as solo walks evolved into a vibrant group that combines education, community spirit, and regular litter-picking to inspire environmental stewardship.

The group is a mix of passionate locals from schoolchildren to retirees, who meet regularly to tackle litter hotspots.

Emdad says: “We don’t just clean up; we connect, educate, and celebrate our shared commitment to a cleaner, greener neighbourhood. What unites us is pride in our surroundings and the belief that everyone deserves a litter free space.

Recently, the group launched a “Clean Corners” initiative, focusing on overlooked spots like alleyways, underpasses, and bus stops. The feedback from residents has been “incredibly positive and energising”.

The Little Litter League also collaborates with local schools, scouts, sports and faith groups and businesses, and partners with eco-conscious groups and wildlife trusts.

Active stewardship

Emdad says these partnerships help the members to combine environmental awareness with active stewardship, expanding their reach and deepening the group’s impact.

When asked for his best tips to share with other volunteers, he advised: “Never underestimate the ripple effect of your actions. What might seem like a quiet solo effort can influence attitudes, build movements, and create cleaner, kinder communities.

“Start small but stay consistent. It’s not about perfection, it’s about persistence.

“Don’t be discouraged by the scale of the problem; every piece of litter picked is a piece that won’t harm wildlife or pollute our communities. Share your journey as it might just spark someone else’s.”

“Being a Litter Hero is about setting a visible example of care in a world that desperately needs it.”

Mollie Clay, Litter Heroes Programme Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said: “Emdad goes above and beyond to not only clean up the local area, but to also support people to live sustainably. We're proud to call him one of our Ambassadors and celebrate the amazing work he does.”
