Warrington volunteers receive King's Award

A network of litter-picking volunteers in Warrington has been honoured with a King’s Award for Voluntary Service - regarded as ‘the MBE for volunteer groups’.

Warrington Litter Volunteers 2025

This year, 2025, the Warrington Litter Volunteers group, which has 12 regular litter teams in the town, is having a record breaking year. They expect to pass 10,000 bags picked for the first time ever!

Volunteers have already picked over 40,000 bags of litter since 2019 and have raised over £6,000 for a local veterans' charity by recycling aluminium drinks cans.

The group is open to volunteers from all backgrounds and has also worked closely with people seeking asylum.

The “Royal stamp of approval” is helping to persuade and inform our local public of the merits of our litter volunteers' activities.

Dr Tony DIxon, Litter Heroes Ambassador

Keep Britain Tidy Litter Heroes Ambassador Dr Tony Dixon said: "We can see that our town is getting tidier and we perceive that public behaviour is changing.

"Receiving the KAVS award has been very rewarding for our team leaders and volunteers.

"As Warrington Litter Volunteers we are all very proud to have achieved this national award. Coming from His Majesty the King, this recognises the merits of what we do and the high standards that we achieve."

He added: "This provides a huge dose of pride, and further impetus and motivation to our teams. It also raises our local profile. The “Royal stamp of approval” is helping to persuade and inform our local public of the merits of our litter volunteers' activities."

Since 2019 the group has had around 350 volunteers. Their biggest single volunteer pick included 220 volunteers for the Warrington Crown Litter pick on the Bank Holiday Monday for King Charles' Coronation in May 2023.
