Spotlight on: River Heroes Grantham RiverCare

This Volunteers’ Week, we are shining a spotlight on our incredible volunteers and their groups of litter-pickers who are making a tangible difference to our local environment and community; showing that they truly love where they live.

Grantham RiverCare

Next up is Grantham RiverCare whose #RiverHeroes, for over 2 decades, have been the guardians of a vital 1.8-mile stretch along the River Witham. This volunteer group is part of Keep Britain Tidys' RiverCare & BeachCare programme, which supports a network of fantastic volunteer groups carrying out vital work along waterways in their local area. Located in the East of England and funded by Anglian Water, our RiverCare & BeachCare volunteer groups clear litter, help manage habitats, monitor species and campaign locally.

Grantham RiverCare's journey began with the initial vision of John Knowles and continues today under the co-leadership of David Martin and Ian Simmons. Their commitment has cultivated a vibrant team of over 65 volunteers who have tirelessly prevented countless pollutants from entering their precious local waterways, making Grantham a healthier and more beautiful place for all.

Their two decades of dedication, their immediate response to the January floods, and their ongoing commitment to environmental protection and community resilience make them true champions of the River Witham and the entire Grantham community.

Keep Britain Tidy team

Earlier this year, the true spirit of Grantham RiverCare was displayed during the devastating floods of January 2025. Despite being on a scheduled break, the extraordinary team sprang into action with remarkable speed. They provided vital flood alerts and warnings to residents, established a welcoming hot drinks hub for those affected, and undertook monumental clean-up efforts once the waters receded.

By April, an astounding 100 bags of debris and numerous large, cumbersome items were removed. The riverbanks, once a scene of "carnage," were meticulously restored to the beauty of late Spring. This incredible feat was a direct result of the unwavering spirit of RiverCare’s volunteers and the crucial support from partners such as East Mercia Rivers Trust, Lions Environmental Ltd, South Kesteven District Council (SKDC), and the Environment Agency.

Grantham flooding

Grantham RiverCare's impact extends far beyond litter-picking. Their River Heroes actively contribute to community resilience in lasting ways. Their detailed observations and invaluable information-sharing directly assisted the Environment Agency in finalising their comprehensive flood report. This collaborative effort led to crucial insights and the development of solutions for local households, helping to protect them from future events. Furthermore, their weekly column in the local paper consistently amplifies these vital messages, keeping the community informed and engaged.

This Volunteers' Week, we proudly celebrate the extraordinary and enduring impact of our Grantham RiverCare volunteers. Their two decades of dedication, their immediate response to the January floods, and their ongoing commitment to environmental protection and community resilience make them true champions of the River Witham and the entire Grantham community.
