Spotlight on: Litter Heroes Ambassadors Clean Our Patch

This Volunteers’ Week, we are shining a spotlight on our incredible volunteers and their groups of litter-pickers who are making a tangible difference to our local environment and community; showing that they truly love where they live.

Clean Our Patch

Today we’re showcasing Clean Our Patch, a Community Interest Company, founded by Litter Heroes Ambassadors Ash Samuels and El Clarke in 2018. In the heart of their community, this remarkable group is proving that a cleaner environment is just the beginning of building stronger connections. Their mission is to create community via means of litter-picking.

Clean Our Patch runs an impressive 40 litter-picks a month, with 500-600 volunteers participating on average, through both solo and group efforts. Their consistent commitment is transforming local spaces and, more importantly, the lives of those involved.

The primary and most visible impact of Clean Our Patch is the removal of litter, making our shared spaces more enjoyable and safer. However, their influence extends far beyond this, as the group fosters an important sense of inclusion for individuals who may have experienced loneliness or isolation.

For many, especially during tough times, Clean Our Patch provides a crucial sense of purpose and belonging, demonstrating that the litter-pick is merely a tool, while community is the true achievement.

Clean Our Patch

Affectionately known as the "Clean Our Patch family," this group embodies the true spirit of community. They understand that not everyone can physically participate in litter picking, and they've created numerous ways for people to contribute and feel valued. Volunteers regularly donate cakes, tea, or coffee for post-pick refreshments, and local cafés even offer a 50% discount for participants. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone has equal value regardless of background; promoting that it’s about what you’re doing now that’s important. For many, especially during tough times, Clean Our Patch provides a crucial sense of purpose and belonging, demonstrating that the litter-pick is merely a tool, while community is the true achievement.

When asked what they are most proud of, co-founder El Clarke shared: "Every single person who has come on board and taking our ethos forward."

They emphasise: "None of this would have been achieved without our volunteers," highlighting the collective effort and dedication that drives their success.

This group understands the power of partnership, actively collaborating with a wide range of organisations. Their network includes Clean Up UK, KBT, local community connections, churches, scout groups, drug and rehabilitation centres, and inpatient mental health facilities. They also engage with schools and educational institutions, demonstrating a drive and continued passion to expand their reach and impact.

As Volunteers' Week shines a light on the incredible contributions of volunteers, this group extends a heartfelt thank you to "everyone who has got behind us and supported us."

They openly share that there are times when they face challenges and question their efforts, but the unwavering support of their community "helps to shine a light and inspires us."

This case study is a testament to the transformative power of volunteerism, showcasing how a simple act like litter picking can blossom into a vibrant community that cleans spaces, connects people, and gives purpose.
