Keep Britain Tidy takes fly-tipping report to Parliament

MPs, local authorities and Keep Britain Tidy's own experts contributed to a discussion on the steps that are needed to tackle the country's fly-tipping epidemic at latest meeting of Tidy Britain All-Party Parliamentary Group.

The latest meeting of the Tidy Britain All-Party Parliamentary Group focused in on the fly-tipping epidemic, which is impacting every constituency in the country.

With more than one million incidents of fly-tipping reported by English councils each year and many more flying under the radar, the impact on the environment and on communities is devastating.

MPs, local authorities and policy experts in attendance were presented Keep Britain Tidy's new Fly-tipping Action Plan, Tipping the Scales, which identifies key areas where national change can be made to drive down fly-tipping, including mandating producers of bulky goods to collect those goods at the end of their life, and raising the fines handed out in the magistrates' court.

Fly-tipping is not a victimless crime nor is it petty offending, it is organised crime that undermines responsible businesses, damages our environment and erodes public trust. To turn the tide, we need tougher penalties to deter offenders, a robust permit system so rogue operators can’t hide in plain sight and a system that makes it easier for people to do the right thing.

Keep Britain Tidy launched its updated plan to tie in with the launch of the first Fight Fly-tipping Fortnight campaign in November 2025.

Tipping the Scales features new research with both the public and local authorities and makes recommendations for changes that we think will help turn the tide on fly-tipping.
