Keep Britain Tidy joins coalition demanding nature is restored

Keep Britain Tidy staff joined the charity's celebrity ambassador - TV presenter and naturalist Chris Packham - and a coalition of wildlife organisations in London to protest at the failure to address the deepening crisis in nature.

The charity was among more than 40 of the UK’s most respected conservation organisations - including scientists, ecologists and wildlife experts - who joined forces on Thursday morning to protest at the Defra offices about the destruction of wild places and widlife which were laid bare in the recent devastating State of Nature Report.

Chris is leading the direct call to 'Restore Nature Now' to the UK government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, saying those responsible for protecting nature are failing.

Ruth Jenkins, Director of Finance, Keep Britain Tidy, said: "Since the 1970s, the UK has lost almost half of its biodiversity, ranking at the bottom of the G7 nations.

"Our parks, beaches, rivers, and canals are vital to restoring our nation’s biodiversity and mitigating climate change. That is why our hundreds of thousands of volunteers work to clean up the environment on their doorstep but we need our government to play their part too."

Chris Packham said: “This is beyond an ‘Attack on Nature’ in the UK. Our wildlife is being annihilated. Our wild places and wildlife are not ‘dying’- they are being killed.

" Those responsible for killing nature are getting away with it. Those responsible for protecting nature are failing. We are taking our demand ‘Restore Nature Now’ direct to the government department responsible for failing nature in this country.”
