Bin it or take it home
The latest coastal intervention from Keep Britain Tidy, proven to reduce beach litter by up to 59%. Developed following research which found that almost half (42%) of young people aged 18-24 admit to leaving litter after visiting the beach.
Our new intervention, designed by the Keep Britain Tidy Centre for Social Innovation, helps coastal authorities tackle littering on beaches and at seaside locations, by focussing on the link between land and ocean litter.
The intervention has been trialled at 3 beach locations; Teignmouth Beach, Bridlington South Beach and Margate Main Sands, and during the one month trial was shown to deliver the following results;
- Litter on the beaches reduced by an average of 26%, and up to 59% at one beach+
- There was a 55% reduction in the number of times we observed someone leaving their rubbish next to or on top of a bin+
In addition to these amazing results, members of the general public were also canvassed for their opinion on the intervention at each location. Results from these interviews found that 95% of beach visitors agreed that knowing that rubbish left by the bins could end up in the sea makes them concerned about disposing of their rubbish correctly, plus 9 out of 10 people said that the stickers should be used in other coastal locations to reduce litter left by bins*.
*Surveys were carried out with 311 visitors to the three beaches whilst the intervention was in place. +162 hours of behavioral observations were carried out at the three beaches, observing and recording 1,072 disposals of waste items. Enquire now
About the intervention
‘Bin It or Take It Home’, addresses beach littering behaviour directly by highlighting that litter left around bins and elsewhere on beaches can be spread by winds,tides and birds, and end up in the sea potentially harming marine life.
This intervention includes large floor stickers which can be displayed around bins, smaller stickers which can be placed on bins and correx signs for use on railings, lamp posts and other street furniture on or near the beach.
These eye-catching materials use positive imagery of a British seaside rock-pool theme and asks visitiors to ‘bin it or take it home’.
Intervention objectives;
- Raise awareness that leaving litter by the side of bins or on top is still littering
- Reduce litter in the target areas
Target audience;
- This is a behaviour change intervention which targets those who ‘litter at the beach’.
