Our Partner Marks & Spencer

Keep Britain tidy are thrilled to be working with Marks & Spencer, whom, for the first time are supporting the Great British Spring Clean campaign 2019.

On Tuesday 5th April, Keep Britain Tidy joined 50 volunteers from Marks and Spencers stores accross Greater Manchester to clean-up in the city centre.

Together we collected 33 bags of rubbish, including an umbrella and a large water dispenser. We set off from M&S on Market Street and visited Parsonage Gardens and St Johns Gardens, battling hail stones as we headed to Castlefield Bowl and ending with a nice hot cup of tea kindly provided by The Science and Industry Museum for all our M&S #LitterHeroes.

Jo Elliot, Store Manager for M&S Manchester Market Street, said:

“It’s been fantastic to see colleagues and the community come together to help collect litter from the streets in Manchester. As we continue to work towards our plastic reduction goals, we want to go a step further and help our customers and the next generation to have a real impact on the environment. Customers often don’t know how best to recycle certain types of plastic or where it goes after being collected by local councils, so we want to help grow a greater understanding of landfill, while helping our customers to give plastic a new purpose.”

As part of its plastic plan, M&S will ensure all of its packaging is widely recyclable by 2022 as part of the UK Plastics Pact. In the meantime, they have also recently launched a new 'Plastic Take Back' initiative to prevent plastic waste from going to landfill by encouraging customers to return 'difficult to recyle' plastic packaging back to the store – where M&S will give the collected plastic a new life by recycling into store fittings, furniture and playground equipment.
