Welcoming Government announcement on bottle deposit scheme

Today, we welcome the announcement from the Environment Secretary Michael Gove of plans to introduce a Deposit Return Scheme in England.

The announcement follows campaigning by Keep Britain Tidy for the introduction of such a scheme and our research, published in October, which showed that councils would benefit financially from the introduction of such a scheme.
 

“This is fantastic news for everyone who cares about the environment on their doorstep as well as our marine environment.

“Plastic bottles and aluminium cans litter our streets, parks and beaches and we know that they have a devastating impact on our wildlife and marine life.

“More than 80% of the litter in the ocean, including millions of plastic bottles, comes from the land and a well-designed DRS scheme will mean that around 95% of the bottles and cans we buy should be recycled and not become part of the plastic pollution problem.”
