We help Ealing hit a 50% recycling rate 04 September 2017
After a borough-wide waste and recycling service change, supported by Keep Britain Tidy, we are delighted that Ealing Council have surpassed a 50% recycling rate – a 5% increase against the previous year.

With the support of Keep Britain Tidy’s Waste Services team, the change to waste and recycling services has helped Ealing Council achieve a 50.66% recycling rate. In addition, the service change means an annual saving of £1.7m from operational efficiency, and savings in waste disposal costs by diverting a projected 6,354 tonnes from landfill or residual waste processing.

Our support started back in the summer of 2015 with a survey of all properties in the borough (nearly 100,000 properties) to assess suitability for new wheeled bins for refuse and recycling, commissioned by Ealing Council’s waste contractor Amey. Against an already tight timescale, efficient planning and excellent team work led to the survey finishing ahead of schedule.

From March 2016, a team of five Keep Britain Tidy project support officers joined Ealing Council’s recycling team to support the set-up and roll-out of the wheeled bins and alternate weekly collections. The team of Support Officers gradually grew to seven and was supplemented by a team of ten Recycling Advisors, helping residents get to grips with the new service.

Catherina Pack, Waste & Street Services Manager at Ealing Council said,“The Keep Britain Tidy team were an essential part of the strategy for the introduction of alternate weekly collections across the Ealing borough. The team’s hard work and dedication to the project, along with numerous educational and outreach visits to help residents in understanding the new service contributed towards a successful introduction of alternate weekly collections in Ealing.

“The assistance received in identifying and troubleshooting issues and the dedication towards changing residents’ behaviours assisted us in achieving the result of a 5% increase in recycling rates.
