Passing the baton: ten-mile relay cleans up our beaches

For the LOVEmyBEACH team, and their dedicated volunteers, Tuesday wasn’t a normal nine-to-five day in the office.

Their day began at St Anne’s Pier and passing the ‘golden litter picker’ from group to group, the litter-picking relay teams hugged ten miles of the North West coastline, moving up past Blackpool’s iconic landmarks to end at Cleveleys. The ten teams picked up a staggering 100kg of litter between them.

Both regular and local volunteers got involved, supported by local businesses and organisations including Sealife Centre, Madame Tussaud’s, the Tower, C2V construction, BIU, and Lytham Sixth Form. Despite the weather, around 75 volunteers relayed, joined by 20 school children from nearby Rossall School.

Fylde BeachCare officer Emma Whitlock said,

“although BeachCare groups are out cleaning up the coast all through the year, we wanted to do something fun and different to celebrate the Great British Spring Clean.

“Our beach relay has allowed us to clear up ten miles of wonderful beaches across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre, helping to protect our seas at the same time. We hope it will inspire others to take part in Great British Spring Clean events or join a beach clean in the future.”

Every single person who joins us in our Great British Spring Clean this March is helping us make a real difference and clean up the country.
