Swishing at last year's events

Fashion-forward are swapping for good

Stylish North Londoners swap their clothes

11/01/18

We’ve not worn nearly a third of the clothes in our wardrobes in the last year. That’s worth over £1,000 for the average household, or £30 billion in total. And one in six 18-25 year olds say they’ll never wear the same outfit again if they’ve been seen wearing it on social media.

Which means that while we are shopping for new looks, we have wardrobes stuffed with things we don’t, or won’t, wear anymore.  To tackle this head-on, we’ve teamed up with North London Waste Authority for a third year to deliver seven ‘Swish and Style’ events.

These events, back by popular demand, gives everyone who lives, works or studies in north London the chance to refresh their wardrobes for free, by swapping their donations for other peoples'.

Our range of upcycling workshops, will help turn unwearable clothes and scraps into useful, beautiful items.  And a free seamstress service, offering quick repairs and alterations.

You don’t need to pre-book, and the events are free, but they are only open to people who live, work or study in one of the seven north London boroughs (Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest).

Find your local event, we look forward to seeing you there ...

  • Hackney - Sat 27th January, 2 – 4:30pm - St Mark's Church Hall, St Mark's Rise, Dalston

Cllr. Clyde Loakes, Chair of NLWA, commented, “An estimated £140 million worth of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year. Our swishing events are fun, free and help to reduce the environmental impact of buying new clothing by reducing the amount of old clothes that get thrown away.

“By providing the tools and knowledge to help everyone think about reusing textiles in an interesting way we’re hoping local community groups and residents will get excited about swishing, and also to promote the wider reuse of unwanted items.”
