About this clean-up:

I have been a volunteer litter picker on behalf of Merton Borough Council for the last 4 years; picking litter on at least three occasions per week. I also engaged with both 'Clean for the Queen' and 'The Great Spring Clean' of previous years. The dropping of litter is a selfish act, particularly when others are expected to clean up afterwards. The responsibility though for clean streets cannot be left as the sole responsibility of the local authority; litter free streets is everybody's business! During my litter picking rounds I have met with nothing but praise and thanks -with one notable exception when a man upbraided me for doing the councils job! My response was this! When the sirens sound some take to the shelters and others man the barricades. I choose the litter free streets barricade.
