Rutland Water was one of only fifteen Green Flag Awarded sites to also achieve a special innovation award this year, thanks to their approach to open water access.
This reservoir, managed by Anglian Water, now has its very own inland beach, a perfect spot for swimming and other water activities. The shore was transformed thanks to four hundred tonnes of sand, covering a 140-metre stretch of shoreline, and a newly-created 2,800 square metre swimming area.
Their brand-new beach has been popular since it opened. Now the beach and swimming area, with lifeguards on duty, are open every day during the summer holidays.
Jake Williams, Head of Parks and Recreation said: “We are extremely proud to be able to win this special award, alongside flying the Green Flag for another year. The water park is a wonderful asset to Rutland and the surrounding area – there is so much to see and do whether you love getting out in the water at our beach or open swim events, fishing, wildlife watching, or just spending a day out with the family in a beautiful tranquil spot.
“What makes this award even more special is our reservoirs were created to provide water for millions of households and provide a home for wildlife, but Rutland’s inland beach means it’s a great place for people to enjoy themselves as well.”
Well done to the team at Rutland Water for their innovative thinking in creating their very own beach.
