We know the marine environment is under pressure at the moment - for example due to plastic pollution, or animals being tangled in, or eating, marine litter. But there are things each of us can do to help.
Did you know over 50 species of shark and ray (sharks' flat cousins) live in British waters. They can be a great indicator of how healthy our seas are - if the sharks are doing ok, then everything they rely on must be doing ok too.
If you are lucky enough to be visiting a beach this weekend, why not get involved in the Shark Trust's Great Eggcase Hunt. This citizen-science project has been running since 2003 and has now recorded over 150,000 eggcases from members of the public. You don't need to be an expert - all the information you need is online - and you don't even need to get your feet wet. Just look out for eggcases on the beach and let the Shark Trust know.
Another way you can help marine life is joining us in the fight against marine litter. As 80% of marine litter was originally dropped on land, you can do this whether you are by the sea or not. So wherever you are litter-picking this weekend, you'll be helping our seas as well as your local patch.
If you are looking to get more involved, we also run various volunteering projects around the coast. Last year alone these groups gave 45,000 volunteer hours to improve our canals, rivers and beaches. These include RiverCare and BeachCare around the Anglian coast, BeachCare in the SouthWest, WatersideCare in the Severn Trent area and LoveMyBeach along the NorthWest coast. All these projects support volunteering groups through both advice and practical support.
