Free activity pack about walking!
The Walk4Life team have recently released a teacher pack full of activity ideas aimed at children aged between 7 – 11 years. As with the whole Walk4Life scheme, the pack is colourful, bright and inspiring! It is totally free and can be downloaded from www.walk4schools.info
There are curriculum links to citizenship, geography, ICT, maths and PE. Feedback from schools using the resources so far has been really positive. There are some case studies to browse on the website.
Why not plot a local mile with the children! Most people can’t imagine how far a mile is, or how long it will take to walk. There are free waymarker stickers available to mark out the mile on the ground. Then you can test everyone’s fitness by walking the mile and taking the walking fitness test.
The activities help you to:
-
foster the students’ understanding of interactive maps
-
mould the next generation of confident online map makers!
-
discuss as a group how walking is an environmental issue, and how different the environment would be if we all walk more
-
encourage a healthy lifestyle – inspire the children to walk further and more often
-
build co-operation and team spirit by taking a class challenge
-
practise mental arithmetic, for instance how long would it take the group to walk to the moon and back
-
and much more!
There is even a fun certificate to print off to reward and celebrate everyone’s efforts! Or if you do the 1-mile walk, there are free “I’ve walked a mile” stickers for everybody.
Walk4Life is part of the bigger Change4Life campaign, which encourages us all to take small steps towards a healthier lifestyle that add up to big changes.
