are marked out with yellow lines on the ground and equipped with bright yellow
bins to provide smokers with the specialist facilities they feel comfortable
using to dispose of their cigarette butts. The zones are designed to help tackle smoking-related litter and cut the costs of cleaning in the town centre. Each zone is undercover and has two prominent, specially designed cigarette bins. The initiative is also hoped to encourage a change of behaviour in smokers’ littering habits.
In the project trial, held at London's Euston station, Smoking Zones have reduced cigarette litter by up to a staggering 89%. Designed to target ‘hotspots’,our Smoking Zones solution provides people with a designated area to smoke and, more importantly, specialist facilities, designed in response to research, that enable smokers to dispose of their cigarettes responsibly.
Mike Lilley, portfolio holder for safer communities and licensing, said: "Littering can be an issue in many town centres, but by working with partners we can help encourage positive behavioural change and improve Colchester's town centre for local residents, day visitors, businesses and tourists alike."
