WatersideCare is a new one-year pilot initiative for the Midlands, following on from the work of Rivercare in East Anglia/East Midlands.
The network of rivers, canal, streams and lakes across the Midlands provide vital green spaces for wildlife and people. Too often, these areas are neglected, attracting rubbish and vandalism.
Like RiverCare, the aim of WatersideCare is to have fun and empower community groups to ‘adopt’ and enhance their local waterway environment by carrying out regular conservation, litter clean-up, water quality improvement and wildlife surveying tasks. Once up and running (i.e. self-supervising), it is hoped that WatersideCare groups will be key players in the ongoing improvement of our region's waterways, providing places where people and wildlife thrive! In addition to staff support, WatersideCare is able to provide the tools, protective gear, insurance and surveying equipment necessary to carry out practical tasks. WatersideCare will also assist groups in applying for additional sources of funding where appropriate.
The WatersideCare initiative is led by a partnership of Keep Britain Tidy, British Waterways, Severn Trent Water and the Environment Agency.
