Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of the school.
Eco-Schools allows schools to work towards three awards – Bronze, Silver and the prestigious Green Flag. The programme is free to schools and once registered schools work through a seven step process which involves:-
• Eco-Committee
• Environmental Review
• Action Plan
• Eco-Code
• Involve Whole School and Wider Community
• Links to the Curriculum
• Monitor and Evaluate Progress
Children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools - they lead the eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of the school. As part of the programme schools work on a variety of environmental topics including; water, biodiversity, energy, global perspective, healthy living, litter, schools grounds, transport and waste. Along with improving the environment, it can allow schools to save money, achieve recognition and publicity, links into the community and allows for improvement within the school environment.
