The Quality Coast Award is designed to reflect the many different uses of the coastline. Whilst there is only one Quality Coast Award, applications can be made through three different categories depending on the infrastructure of your beach.
Category A – Resort Bathing Beach
• Mandatory water quality as minimum requirement
• Well developed facilities (e.g. toilets, first aid, disabled access) which are often supervised
• A variety of activities encouraged on the beach
• Dogs banned from all or part of the beach during bathing season
Category B – Bathing Beach
• Mandatory water quality as minimum requirement
• Generally less developed with fewer facilities but still well managed
• Quieter than a resort beach but activities include walking, relaxing and bathing
• Dogs allowed on beach during bathing season but with responsible control and ownership encouraged
Category C – Non-bathing Beach
• Few facilities and generally undeveloped
• Usually quieter and more remote
• Water quality either untested or not actively promoted for water-based activities
• Dogs may or may not be banned from all or part of the beach
