21 January 2011

Keep Britain Tidy is today asking the public to add their names to a petition to make soap characters accountable for their dirty habits. The move comes after Corrie favourite Peter Barlow shamelessly flicked his cig butt on to the cobbles in Monday night’s episode.
Loyal Facebook and Twitter fans were quick to spot the litter lout, in what is the latest example of a behaviour for which Peter Barlow is well known.
Keep Britain Tidy is keen to take the plea beyond the internet to make its petition as effective as possible in bringing about a storyline that sees him told-off for his anti-social behaviour.
Jill Partington from Keep Britain Tidy said: “Soaps keen to reflect reality should also consider that, in reality, Peter could probably be either fined or reprimanded for regularly chucking his fag butts on the floor.
“Corrie is able to take on serious issues using good humour; I can imagine Norris having something to say on the matter!’More than 11.5 million viewers watch Coronation Street every week making it one of the most influential programmes on TV. As the most famous street on TV, Keep Britain Tidy is keen for its characters to lead by example on the litter issue.
