Wigan wins the battle

26 April 2010

The biggest tidy up event in Wigan has been hailed a huge success as hundreds of people joined our crusade to tidy up the town!

More than 200 people came out to spruce up Wigan as part of our special St George’s Day event.

A grand total of 147 bags of litter were collected on the day, with some of the weird and wonderful items found including a Father Christmas balloon, a pregnancy test, a pink fluffy handcuff, a hammer and a Yoda Star Wars figure.

Our special Big Tidy Up bus helped transport the volunteers from tidy ups across the town to Alexandra Park following the event for food, drinks, face painting and celebrations.

Stripey the Laticat, the cat mascot for Wigan Athletic Football Club, also made a guest appearance, handing out free football and rugby tickets to some lucky volunteers.

The event attracted mass support from the town with volunteers from schools and local businesses including McDonald’s, Sainsbury’s, Go Outdoors, B&Q and Wickes as well as Wigan council.
