The Winter Wonderland of a Green Flag Award Park!

14 December 2009

Green Flag Award parks around the country are celebrating the arrival of Christmas with a host of yuletide activities.  Why not head down to your local park where you could be entertained by carol singers; browse at one of the Christmas markets or visit Santa in his grotto.

The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales and recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country.  Keep Britain Tidy runs the Green Flag Award in partnership with BTCV and GreenSpace.

There are a number of parks and green spaces around the country which are holding events.  If you haven’t done all your Christmas shopping then Colchester Castle is opening its doors to a fabulous festive market; there’s communal carol singing on the Green at the Old Bakehouse Millennium Green in Northumberland; Bilton Silver Brand will be performing your favourite carols at Caldecott Park in Warwickshire; while in Bicclescombe Park in Devon you can take part in a Christmas Treasure Hunt.

If organized activities don’t take your fancy then why not take advantage of the winter beauty on offer in so many parks around the country. Many parks have winter walks planned providing the perfect opportunity to escape from the chaos of Christmas or walk off those extra mince pies! There are winter walks coming up in various parks including: Shipley Country Park in Derbyshire; Birkenhead Park in Merseyside and Holland Park in London combining the opportunity to enjoy the calmness of a crisp, winter’s day with the chance to explore the signs of winter amongst the flora and fauna.

Paul Todd, manager of the Green Flag Award Scheme said: “Winter is a fantastic time to explore your local Green Flag Award park with so many events planned for all ages.  Even if your park doesn’t have Christmas activities planned then you can still make the most of winter if you wrap up warm, head outside and create your own fun.”

To find out what events are happening at a park or green space near you then check out the Green Flag Award website at www.greenflagaward.org.uk and click on the events section.
