50,000 bags of litter collected in The Big Tidy Up

20 August 2009

As the Big Tidy Up approaches its first birthday in September we have another reason to be celebrating.

Since the campaign started in September 2008 14,650 groups have signed up to carry out Big Tidy Ups across the country which has lead to a staggering 50,000 bags of rubbish being removed from our streets.

That is enough rubbish to fill 714 builders skips, and if lined up the bags would stretch a whopping 31 miles!

Natalie Forrester, marketing coordinator for the Big Tidy up campaign said “We would like to say thank you to everyone who has taken part in a Big Tidy Up for helping us reach this landmark achievement.

“It is fantastic that everyone has come together and made such a positive impact on their local environment and even better is the news that that our streets are now 50,000 bags of litter cleaner!”

However, there is still a way to go to reach our target of 500,000 bags of rubbish.

If you have carried out a Big Tidy Up make sure that your register it with the Big Tidy Up website in order to add to our results.

To find four bags of litter on the streets is a lot!

Not all groups register their bags after they have carried out a Big Tidy Up. Which is why it is really important that Big Tidy Up groups register their tidy ups and let us know how many bags they have collected so that we can work towards our target of 500,000 bags.

So each group picked up fewer than four bags each?
