New Drive to Beat Car Litter

09 February 2009

Keep Britain Tidy is closely monitoring a council's bid to put the skids under litter problems by handing out free car bins.

Thurrock Council in Essex has launched the scheme, believed to be the first of its kind in England.

It will be giving away 100 bins to help residents keep their vehicles tidy and prevent litter escaping into the street.

Keep Britain Tidy estimates that 1.3 million items of litter are thrown from cars every weekend while, in a survey, the issue was found to be Britain's biggest driving annoyance with 90% of road users saying they found it irritating.

Councillor Steve Veryard, cabinet member for Environmental Services at Thurrock Council, said: "Keeping our streets clean has always been a priority so we are happy to give away some free car bins.

"The bins are useful as they have a double waterproof lining and an easy installation strap. They also store away neatly and are easy to empty and use again and again."

A Keep Britain Tidy spokesperson said: "We are currently carrying out extensive research into car litter and the most effective ways of tackling it.

"We welcome any new ideas in dealing with the problem and will be very interested to see how effective Thurrock's car bins are."
