Wombles Comeback

The nation's favourite litter-picking folk, the Wombles, are staging a comeback to encourage schoolchildren to be more environmentally friendly.
Three of the most popular Wombles characters - wise storyteller Great Uncle Bulgaria, work-shy Orinoco and culinary queen Madame cholet - feature on handy trolley token keyrings now on sale in Curry's high street stores.
Money generated from the sale of the keyrings is being ploughed back into the Eco-Schools programme run by ENCAMS, which encourages youngsters to take up eco-friendly projects and make their school more sustainable.
The Wombles are furry creatures which live in burrows on Wimbledon Common, where they collect and recycle rubbish. They originally featured in children's novels written by Elisabeth Beresford before making their TV debut in what became a cult animated show.
Their green message was way ahead of its time and captured the imagination of both children and adults throughout the 1960s and 70s. During the 70s the Wombles teamed up with Keep Britain Tidy in a high profile campaign to remind members of the public to bin their litter and look after the environment.
Not content with their literary and TV fame, The Wombles went on to become chart-busting recording stars.
