Royal Mail vow to stop the red band litter

15 July 2009

Royal Mail has pledged that they will recycle the 13,000 red rubber bands that we returned to them last month.

In a letter from the Director of Delivery and Collections, Michael Stockdale, Royal Mail assures us that they “take the issue of littering very seriously”

The postal company currently have a recycling scheme in place for the millions of rubber bands that are used in their day to day operations.

However, our rubber bands campaign has highlighted that there are still a high number of bands that end up on the pavements and in people’s gardens.

In response to this Royal Mail has stated that they will continue to train their postmen and women to “understand the importance of avoiding litter”.

Michael Stockdale goes on to confirm that Royal Mail is “committed to making every effort to help keep streets across the UK clear of litter”.

Judging by the number of rubber bands my youngest son collects on a daily basis, the Royal Mail has a long way to go to cleaning up its its image. Sadly, Michael Stockdale your letter is nothing more than a PR exercise.

If your campaign to stop the Royal Mail dropping red rubber bands works, does that mean I will have to actually go out and buy some rubber bands? I have been picking them up off the street whenever I have seen them for some considerable time and reusing them myself. Just shows that whatever you do there is no pleasing some people, keep up the good work.
