Celebrating council success

The best environmental schemes from councils across the country were showcased this week at the Keep Britain Tidy Conference.
Leading figures from local authorities, housing associations and other land managers attended the two-day event at the Midland Hotel, Manchester. Organised by the Keep Britain Tidy Network, the conference focused on making England’s communities, towns and cities better places to live.
Comedienne Ruby Wax hosted the awards ceremony, which honoured a range of innovative schemes by councils tackling problems such as dog fouling and litter.
Over the two days delegates listened to expert speakers and took part in workshops offering ideas and guidance on tackling issues such as litter, building stronger and cleaner communities, enforcement, anti-social behaviour, and continuing to maintain and improve local environmental quality efficiently in these challenging economic times.
The conference also gave local authorities and land managers the opportunity to look at the Keep Britain Tidy manifesto for a cleaner England – This is our Home. Keep Britain Tidy is calling for a combined effort over the next decade, from the public, businesses, national and local government, to work with them in a concerted campaign for a cleaner England.
Previously known as the Cleaner Safer Greener (CSG) Network, the Keep Britain Tidy Network was officially launched to members at the conference. The name change heralds the first of many developments to the Network, which will give members access to more products and services.
Keep Britain Tidy chief executive Phil Barton said: “We are delighted to have been in Manchester for the conference which has been a huge success.
“All around England people are striving to create better communities and this event has allowed us to pool knowledge and expertise.
“It has also been fantastic to be able to celebrate the achievements of our local councils across the country, who, in these challenging economic times, have continued to strengthen and improve their local environment. My congratulations to all the winners and finalists for their excellent work.”
