Throughout May staff at McDonald’s restaurants across England are taking to the streets in order to take part in a ‘spring clean’ to help tidy up local areas.

McDonald's has been working in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy to participate in Big Tidy Ups where the staff are forming clean teams and helping to tidy up neighbourhoods that struggle with litter dropping.

McDonald’s actively carry out initiatives on a daily basis such as litter patrols but the lager scale litter picks offer a chance for the staff and community to tackle the problem together and raise awareness that littering is unacceptable.

These events support The Big Tidy Up; Keep Britain Tidy’s biggest anti-litter campaign. Rooted in the community, it aims to get local people, organisations, businesses and groups to take action against the litter problems in their area.

Phil Barton, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy said:  “It’s great that McDonald’s is supporting the Big Tidy Up campaign on such a large scale.  A few years ago we brought to McDonald’s attention that they were one of the brands contributing to litter on our streets.  In response they have significantly increased their efforts to promote the anti-litter message and support our campaigns. 

“As part of the campaign McDonald’s will be making a statement to their customers and the fast-food industry that big businesses can help drive change, lead by example and keep their brand’s litter out of the gutter.” 

Already making a difference
McDonald’s has been working hard since 1982 to reduce the amount of litter on Britain’s streets and was the first restaurant to introduce ‘Litter Patrols’ in the UK.  McDonald’s employees already undertake three litter patrols every day, collecting any litter they see in and around restaurants.
