Say no to car litter!

15 March 2011

Today Keep Britain Tidy's Chief Executive, Phil Barton called on the Government and MPs to support proposed amendments to the Localism Bill to reduce the levels of littering from vehicles.

We believe that drivers who allow their passengers to drop litter are as guilty as those doing the dropping and want Local Authorities to have the ability to track and fine the drivers.  Almost 9,500 people have reported car litterers to Keep Britain Tidy since 2009 but currently we have no way of finding out who the culprits are and acting on it.  If you support our view that car drivers should be held responsible for any litter thrown from their car, let us know.

I am a keen wildlife enthusiast and am fed up to bits of our local area being scattered with litter. I live in East London and am thirteen years old, and have been campaigning locally against littering and fly tipping since I was 9. It came to my attention about a year ago when I witnessed parents outside of my school scattering waste from their cars when dropping students at school. Our school often recieves complaints about the school area being too dirty, but the truth is many of these complaints will come from parents who will willingly admit they throw litter from their cars. I am hoping to raise awareness of the issue on the school website. If the parents have no care for their surroundings, their home, then what hope do we have for the next generation?

As a motorcyclist I need to highlight the danger as well as the mess caused by litter being thrown from cars. I have been hit by litter, and cigarettes in the past. Also, very sadly a 17 year old friend lost his life many years ago when he inadvertently rode over the rubber trim from a car windscreen which had been left in the road. Now if that's not good enough reason to clear up after ourselves I don't know what is! David Croft....great idea about the car details on takeaway boxes!
