A close up of a shoe about to step in chewing gum

Is it illegal to drop gum?

Chewing gum is now classed as litter. Anyone that drops gum in a public place is committing a crime and they can be fined under the Environmental protection Act 1990 and the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act. The average fine is around £95 although a magistrates’ court can impose a fine of up to £2,500. Some areas have council litter wardens who can impose an ‘on the spot’ fine.
