Scotswood Natural Community Garden celebrates windfall
18 January 2010

One of our Green Pennant award-winning sites, The Scotswood Natural Community Garden in Newcastle, is celebrating after learning that they are to receive a surprise windfall of £75,000 from a secret benefactor.
It’s all part of a TV programme which was filmed last year and was broadcast on Channel 4 on Xmas Eve 2009. During the programme, The Secret Millionaire, taxi baron John Griffin, disguised his identity to go undercover in Newcastle on the look-out for worthy projects that could benefit from his money. He paid several visits to Scotswood Natural Community Garden and was so impressed by what he saw that he wrote them a cheque for £75,000.
Kate Dickinson, Garden Manager, said “We were delighted when John handed us the cheque towards, amongst other things, the building of a purpose built educational facility on-site. John voiced his admiration for Scotswood Natural Community Garden and indicated that he is very interested in staying in touch with the project and helping with the transformations envisaged. Thanks John!”
