About this park/green space
Queen Square is an impressive Georgian square, one of the largest of its type in Europe. It is a 2.4 hectare public open space of level lawns and wide gravel paths. It has a fine historic statue as its centre piece and a perimeter of mature plane trees. Views across the square are dominated by the backdrop of magnificent Georgian town houses.
Located in the heart of the City of Bristol, as well as a place for visitors to rest and relax, it also plays an important role as a dramatic open space corridor that links the city's various business, cultural and entertainment destinations. It is estimated that Queen Square has 1.6 million visits per year.
Queen Square is utilised as a dynamic outdoor event destination. The square successfully hosts an exciting range of events including music concerts, outdoor cinema, business exhibitions and open air theatre.
This historical significance, the quality of the landscape and the desire to re-establish the square as high quality public open space, lead to its recent re-development. In 1999, a Heritage Lottery Grant project began to transform the square into its present state. The project is a recognised success, winning many awards for conservation and heritage - the most recent being 'The Landscape Institute 2009 Heritage and Conservation Award'.
Recently, Queen Square achieved the Green Flag Award in recognition of it being successfully managed as a public open space. The Square is also a prominent feature of the 'Bristol In Bloom Award' judging route.
