Avoiding repeat enforcement action
London Borough of Islington is working on a pilot that aims to improve the condition of a service yard used by a number of well-known high street retailers.
The yard has a negative impact on the street environment and raises a number of health and safety issues. Issues include over spilling waste which blows onto the street, poor site security resulting in disposal by unauthorised traders, food waste being stolen by street drinkers and fly-tipping.
The agreement hopes to negate the need for further enforcement action and has successfully engaged the new managing agents of the site to ensure that past problems are not repeated.
The agents are very keen to engage and have provisionally agreed to improve site security and help with intelligence to enable the local authority to tackle fly-tipping. They will benefit from support and advice on improving the cleansing regime by the council. It is hoped that once the managing agents are signed up the businesses that use the yard will also sign up to further agreements to recognise their responsibilities.
