Taking pride in our capital

Capital Standards was established in 2002 as a programme to improve local environmental quality in London.

The programme brings together 28 London local authorities, London councils, Keep Britain Tidy, the Environment Agency Government Office for London, the Greater London Authority (GLA), Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) and Transport for London (TfL).

Capital Standards was established to improve local environmental quality of the capital by identifying and acting upon gaps and opportunities through the engagement of all stakeholders.

The programme includes:

  • The undertaking of local environmental quality surveys in 28 London local authorities;
  • Sharing of best practice through seminars and meetings
  • Training of local authority officers through an enforcement academy
  • Working groups on issues including education, enforcement, graffiti and transport
  • London-wide campaigns on local environmental quality issues
  • London Schools Environment Award

Each year Capital Standards organises a clean up event to encourage communities to take an active role in improving local environmental quality in our capital through coordinated clean up events.

The aim of the annual campaign, the Capital Clean up, is to create a cleaner London through local action. Londoners are encouraged to get involved in the campaign by making improvements to the local environment, leading to a long term sense of ownership and pride in the area, from which we all benefit. The campaign cuts right across the cleaner, safer, greener agenda providing opportunities for all Londoners to get involved.

The Capital Standards programme is managed through a Steering Group consisting of four London borough representatives (drawn from the member authorities), the Greater London Authority, London Councils and Keep Britain Tidy.
