Street Champion Framework – The Six Segments
The Street Champion Framework developed by Keep Britain Tidy and Neighbourhoods NW consists of six main segments, each of them vital to consider when setting up a street champion scheme; each of the segments is briefly described below.
Segment 1: Planning A Street Champion Scheme
This segment discusses how to set overall objectives for the scheme and create an outline budget given the resources available. There is also guidance on how to apply for further funding for the scheme from different local and national sources, and tips on forward planning to make the scheme sustainable in the long term.
Segment 2: People Issues
This segment discusses how to put systems in place for developing volunteers, and ensuring the welfare of all those involved in the scheme. Topics covered include carrying out risk assessments and obtaining insurance, keeping records, training and development, and appropriately recognising and rewarding the efforts of volunteers.
Segment 3: Recruiting Volunteers
The third segment outlines good practice for encouraging new volunteers to join the scheme. Other topics covered include the provision of introductory material and training for volunteers, and the importance of embedding diversity in volunteer recruitment.
Segment 4: Putting the Scheme into Action
This segment describes the operating procedures that should be put in place to ensure that the scheme runs safely and effectively; this includes record keeping, reporting of health and safety issues and information sharing. The different roles that volunteers may perform within the scheme are also described.
Segment 5: Marketing and Publicity
The fifth segment discusses how to make use of marketing and publicity to help your scheme grow. The importance of giving the scheme an appropriate name is emphasised. Other topics include branding and logos, publicity in local newspapers and media, using social media such as Twitter and Facebook, and holding ‘meet and greet’ sessions at community venues.
Segment 6: Monitoring and Evaluation
The final segment outlines several methods of measuring the progress of your scheme towards the original objectives. Topics include the use of performance indicators and Social Return on Investment to provide evidence of the value of your scheme. Advice is also given on how to review progress in each of the previous five segments.
